WOODLEY United saw their chance of returning to the top of the Southern Region Premier Division table dashed when Winchester Flyers scored twice in the last seven minutes of the game to snatch a 2-2 draw.

The opening quarter-of-an-hour was end-to-end with Woodley twice forcing Winchester’s Lauren Higgs to smother balls from the oncoming Rosie Page-Smith and Jodie Penny, while Bryony Morell forced a save from United’s Nicole Haines.

Woodley’s free-kicks into the penalty area tested the visitors defence, while Francesca Thornton fired over the home crossbar and Haines denied Sophie Bamworth in a one-on-one to leave the match goalless at half-time.

The second half got off to the best possible start when Page-Smith split the defence to shoot straight at Higgs, but four minutes into the half with players shouting for a handball in the penalty area Penny reacted quickest to hit the back of the net via a deflection to open the scoring.

Higgs was then called upon to parry a shot from Maddie Sawyer, while the crossbar denied Page-Smith with Amie Benton putting the rebound over the bar.

Hannah Chaffey went on a good run before Haines forced the forward to shot wide as City struggled to get a foothold in the game.

The hosts extended their lead in the 69th minute when Sawyer’s cross was met by substitute Laura Harris-Steers to head pass Higgs from within the penalty area.

However, with four minutes of normal time remaining Charlotte Warhurst converted a penalty to set up a barnstorming finish which saw Chaffey level with a fine run and shot past Haines two minutes into stoppage time.

BARTON Rovers were knocked out of the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup after going down 5-1 to Milton Keynes.

The hosts did score the goal of the game, though, Cheryl Williams netting from the halfway line.

In Division Two South of the Thames Valley Counties League, Barton Royals lost 5-2 to Kingclere despite Hannah Blanchard and Leah North hitting the target.

A LEANNE Saunders penalty was not enough for Newbury as they lost 2-1 to Wycombe Wanderers in the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup.

However, a Bec Walker brace and a Nicole Beesley effort fired Newbury Development past Wargrave 3-1 in the Junior Cup.
