JAX Lawrence and Julia Measures from Castle Royle won the Ladies’ Open at West Berks with 45 points.

This was a remarkable performance as it was the first time they had entered the event or even played the course.

Anita Lockyer and Barbara Lamb from Newbury and Crookham were a single point behind and beat Kathy North and Joyce Collins from Caversham Heath on countback to take second place.

Amanda Butcher and Lucy Bamford from Easthampstead Ladies won the best front-nine prize with 23 points, Fiona Thomas and Sally Tyrell from Drayton Park the best back-nine also with 23, while Linda Hunt of Newbury and Crookham and Alison Woolley of Easthampstead Ladies won nearest-the-pin prizes.

Jane Wilmore, Lyn Pell and Colin Bell won the mixed midweek competition with 115 points, Georgie Seaman, Barry Francis and Gale McAuley were second on 112 and Shelagh Lancaster, Chris Capel and Brian Grace a further shot behind third.

Darren Boulton won a close midweek stableford with 35 points. John Loader was a point behind, beating Greg Collins on countback to take second place.

West Berks members Nigel Day and Tony Athawes have enjoyed consecutive successful open events.

They were placed second in the men’s Open at Henley in Arden while last Saturday they went one better and won the men’s Open at Barton on Sea by scoring 47 points and winning by four clear points.

Meanwhile, the seniors secured a fine 3½-2½ win away to Witney Lakes.

  • DAN Rawlings and Richard Usher walked away with the PJP Cup at Caversham Heath on Saturday.

Rawlings (17hcp) and Usher (19hcp) scored 46 points to win from Michael Deignan (5hcp) and Matt Jones (1hcp) who recorded 44 points.

Kye Machin (2hcp) and Dave Williams (4hcp) were third, on countback from Stuart Webb (9hcp) and Andy Holmes (12hp), both pairs with 43 points.

This weekend features the annual club championships, with the seniors competing tomorrow (Friday).

Both the men and ladies compete across 36 holes on Saturday and Sunday.
