FIVE of Reading AC’s veterans performed well at the British Masters Championships at Alexander Stadium, Birmingham, last weekend.
Saturday’s competition was held in cool and breezy, but dry conditions, while heavy rain and strong winds made for tough conditions for those competing on Sunday.
Julie Wilson (W55 category) was Reading’s most successful competitor, collecting five medals.
She won the gold in the shot (9.66m), silver medals for discus (26.74m) and javelin (19.15m), and bronze medals for the hammer (33.31m) and weight throw (10.96m).
Sue Francis recorded a season-best time in the 1,500m (5m11.94secs) to win the W45 gold medal.
Wendy Lewis (W50) won two bronzes. She led the 80m hurdles race until she hit a hurdle, but held on for third place (14.35s). Her second medal came in the 200m (32.42s) on the flooded track.
Wally Franklyn took a silver medal in the M65 100m, clocking his fastest time of the year (13.45s).
Dave Shields won silver in the M55 triple jump, where he leapt 8.67m despite the conditions meaning the runway was awash with standing water.
