READING City’s perfect start to the Premier Division continued as they made it three wins from three with a 3-1 home success against Fairford Town on Saturday, writes Richard Ashton.

The prolific Mitchell Parker missed an early chance for the hosts after being played in by Rob Gerrard, but the Rivermoor side deservedly went in front shortly after when Alfie Grant superbly half-volleyed home from a corner.

Luke Hastings missed a chance to double the lead after collecting a fine pass from Jack Powell, but Parker made amends for his earlier miss when he hit the back of the net to make it 2-0.

Fairford kept battling, though, and it took a magnificent save from City goalkeeper Eddie Cavanagh to ensure the hosts led 2-0 at the break.

It was the visitors who drew first blood in the second period, though, Jonathan Thomas halving the deficit.

There were few further chances at either end until Parker – who made it seven goals in just three league games – restored his side’s two-goal advantage when he followed up a Harry Grant effort.

Fairford rarely threatened to come back following Parker’s effort, and City held on for the victory with debutant centre-back Billy Cole having a particularly impressive first outing.

Reading City travel to Tuffley Rovers on Saturday (3pm), before a trip to Ardley United on Bank Holiday Monday (7.45pm).
