JOHN Endersby received a one-shot cut in handicap after winning Division One of the midweek stableford at Caversham Heath last Wednesday.

Endersby (17hcp) shot 38 points (halves of 16 and 22, including a nil return) to finish two clear of runner-up Andy King (11hcp).

Third was John Purnell (14hcp), on countback from Mario Atkinson (16hcp) and Anderson Goddard (14hcp), both with 35 points.

The Division Two winner was Jim Willison (24hcp) with 39 points (halves of 18 and 21 points). Second was Ben Storey (19hcp) with 38 points and third was Brian Connolly (27hcp) with 37 points.

Twos were recorded by Jose Fernandez Moure and Dennis Sunderland, both on the 8th hole.

Luke O’Brien won the nine-hole stableford competition on Friday with 21 points. Second was Caroline Dover with 20 points and third was Christopher Bennett with 19 points.

Twos were recorded by Dover, Samuel Kpani-Addy, Stewart Osler, Jason Springer and Rob Winstanley, all on the 8th hole.

Caversham Heath ladies Kathy North and Jane Weller were runners-up at the Berkshire County Ladies Vets Golf Association's first summer meeting (the Margaret R Taylor Salver) held at The Downshire.

North and Weller scored 49 points, two behind the winners Gisela Bradbury and Amanda Button from Castle Royle.

  • SONNING 3rds were edged out 3-2 at Goring & Streatley.

Graham Burgess and Jez Hampton put Sonning ahead with a convincing 4&3 success, only for Paul Siddell and Alex Measures to go down 3&2.

The next two matches – featuring the Sonning pairs of Wayne Adamson and Trevor Woolford and Mike Burlow and Berach Ziegler – were halved, the latter duo coming from four down with five to play to snatch a share of the spoils.

However, Sonning’s last pair of Keith Merrigan and Keith Johnston lost 3&2 to leave Goring victorious.

  • JASON Kendal, who was runner-up last year, shot 76 on Saturday and 88 on Sunday to be crowned club champion at West Berks.

Ten-handicapper Gary Robinson shot 82 and 83 for a 165 and second spot, while Chris Ward was third with 167.

Jane Brackenbury shot 90 and 88 for a 178 to take the ladies’ title for a fifth consecutive year and edge ahead of Linda Alexander in recording the most wins ever in the competition.

Mary Harwood, on 197, took second place a single shot ahead of Gale McAuley who was third.

Gale also won the Mary Harwood Trophy for the best ladies’ overall nett score of 151.

Terry Phelps won the Wise Trophy for 12-18 handicappers with an aggregate score of 182. Matt Thomas was second on 184 and Toby Richards third with 185 Nick Jones put together two very tidy rounds to win the Bennett Trophy, for 19 plus handicappers.

His total of 183 was eight clear shots of Ron Hurst who was second on 191 and Darren Galbraith was third on 198.

Mark Ramos won Division One of the men’s July medal with a gross 85, nett 73. Carl McCartney was second with 85, nett 74 and Jock Douglas third with 90, nett 78.

Pete Dye won Division Two with nett 73 beating Kevin Holland on count-back.

Paul Beake was third with 74, while Dennis White won Division Three with nett 72, one shot clear of Ron Hurst. Jason Read was third with 75.

Pete Ford won the men’s midweek medal scoring nett 74. Tony Atkins with 78 took second place beating Geoff Pudner on countback.

Aileen Summers won the ladies’ July stableford with 41 points, beating Jane Wilmore on countback while Sandy Miller was third in a high-scoring contest with 40 points.

Greg Collins won the midweek nine-hole Liddiard competition with 24 points, Simon Barrie was second on 21, while Martin Rolls with 20 beat Jason Kendal and Alan Capps on countback to take third place.

West Berks won through to the quarter finals of the Hillman Trophy with a fine 4-3 win away at Caversham Heath, a result decided on the final green of the final group.

The mixed team drew 2-2 away at Marlborough, while the ladies' team won 3-1 at home against Bradfield College.
