TWO-TIME major winner and European Tour Order of Merit champion in 2001 and 2002, Retief Goosen took time out from his busy schedule to play Caversham Heath on Thursday.

The South African, winner of seven PGA Tour events and 14 European Tour events, and who was in the world top 10 for 250 consecutive weeks from 2001 to 2007, was a guest at the Penta Hotels Community Golf Day, shooting a gross 66.

Goosen attended with his son Leo to support charities Belu Water/Water Aid and Launchpad.

Penta sponsors the Pentahotels Championship, an event on the Hotel Planner.com PGA EuroPro Tour which is being held at Caversham Heath later this month (July 25-27).

Meanwhile, Will Tate notched 11 pars and four birdies as he scorched to victory in Division One of the Midweek Medal at Caversham Heath last Wednesday.

Tate (3hcp) scored a nett 70 to win by five shots from Archie Smith (1hcp) who had seven pars and five birdies.

Third was Paul Lobban (11hcp), on countback from Mathew Brakspear (7hcp), both with nett 76. Division Two winner was Caroline Dover (26hcp) with nett 75. Runner-up was Samuel Kpani Addy (20hcp), on countback from Simon Dicketts (20hcp), both with nett 77.

Twos were recorded by Smith (8th hole) and by Kpani Addy (13th hole) Pars were also the order of the day on Saturday in Division One of the Weekend Medal.

James Walker (6hcp) came out on top with nett 72, included 10 pars and two birdies – his back nine consisted of seven pars, one birdie and a double bogey. Second was David Jubb (7hcp) with nett 73 (10 pars and one birdie) and third was Craig Duncan (6hcp) with nett 74 (10 pars and one birdie).

Division Two winner was Darren Lawrence (17hcp) with nett 68, including nine pars. Runner-up was Greg McDonald (13hcp), on countback from Luke O’Brien (13hcp), both with nett 72. McDonald had eight pars and a birdie in his round and O’Brien scored nine pars. All three players received a one shot cut in handicap.

Jim McGiveron (21hcp) claimed top spot in Division Three with nett 66. Jane Weller (21hp) was second with nett 68 and Andrew Aspell (25hcp) was third on countback from Dover (25hcp), both with nett 73.

McGiveron received a three-shot cut in handicap, while both Weller and Aspell saw their handicap reduced by one shot.

The only two of the competition was recorded by Peter Bishop on the 8th hole.

  • SHANE Slatter triumphed in winning the Men’s Club Championship at Calcot Park, scoring a gross 73 in his first round and 69 in his second for a 36-hole total of 142.

Last year’s winner, Melan Dhaubhadel, came a close runner-up with two rounds of 72 for 144.

Third place went to Gary Staples with 75 and 73 for 148.

The best nett score on day one went to club captain Chris Shackell, while the best nett score overall went to John Timney with 73 and 70 for 143.

Outside of the other winners, the best gross score on day one went to George Wilson with 71, while Charlie Guest took the honours in round two with 73.

  • MARY Harwood won the Royal Birthday Bonus fun singles competition with 42 points at West Berks.

Deb Weddell was second with 40 and Brian Grace with 39 beat Sian Soanes and Barrie Seaman on countback to take third place.

Phil Cannon shot a fine 42 points to win the men’s midweek stableford with George Jameson second with 40 and Dennis White third with 38.

There was a four-way tie for first place on 21 points in the Liddiard nine-hole competition with the placing of Tony Athawes, Andrew Kerr, Jason Kendal and Chris Terrett decided by countback.

In team events, the men lost 4-3 at Rye Hill.
