FOOTBALL League clubs have today agreed to pass through new proposals that will see the transfer window slam shut in early August.

Teams have historically had until 11pm on August 31 to conclude transfer deals during the summer window.

However, clubs have officially voted through a new scheme which will see the transfer window close following the opening game of the League season.

Consultations with clubs has been going on since 2017 and, following a vote, Reading FC's transfer deadline for next season will shut on Thursday August 9 and 5pm.

EFl chief executive Shaun Harvey said: "After discussing the options throughout the course of the last few months, I’m pleased that the matter has been determined by clubs ahead of the start of next season."

Teams can still sign players on loan up until August 31, including loan moves with an option to buy clause.

They can also sell players to any club whose window is still open.

Mr Harvey added: “This new approach will give clubs and managers the stability they crave earlier in the season whilst also providing the flexibility to add to their squads after the traditional deadline until the end of the month if required.”
