MIKE Sarjent (15hcp) won Calcot Park senior section’s first major competition of the year as he beat 52 rivals in their Spring Stableford last Friday.

He was victorious with an impressive 43 points, with Pete Honey finishing as runner-up with 40 points on countback from Chris Thomas.

The competition for the John Casey Trophy took place on Bank Holiday Monday and generated some very good scores.

Partners for this mixed competition were drawn at random and then the format is played as a Greensomes Stableford.

The runaway winners were club captain Barry Sharp and partner Debbie Ranwell, who recorded 42 stableford points to take the title.

Runners-up with a solid 36 points was the pairing of John Carpenter and Sylvia Buckland.

  • ANN Davies won the eponymous Turner Davies Trophy at West Berks on Saturday, an event she jointly sponsored in 1981 with Gladys Turner, now deceased.

Davies, who won the competition once previously in 1995, scored 38 points, four ahead of Renee Wheeler, who took second spot. Sandy Miller was third with 33.

It was also a good week for Greg Collins, who won the Clama Trophy and Jersey Cup on consecutive Sundays.

Last week he partnered Mike Ridgeway to victory in the Clama Trophy, their score of 43 points edging out Shaun Ponsford and Geoff Pudner by a single point. Mark Kendal and Malcolm Thwaites were a further point behind in third place.

Collins then scored 42 points to win the Jersey Cup by a clear eight points from second-placed Luke Prestoe. Tim Palmer was third with 33, while the top lady was Sandy Miller with 32 points.

Another man in great form is Geoff Pudner. Having won the seniors’ medal the previous week, he won the midweek stableford with 40 points. Rob Bridgeman was second on 39 and Pete Hill third on 37.

Meanwhile, Paul Reber scored 39 points to win the Saturday stableford with Philip Clare taking second place on 38 and John Bennett third with 34.

The midweek mixed competition was a joint celebration of St George's Day and the Queen’s birthday with the team comprising Margaret Sumner, Derrick Perrin and Miller taking first place, followed by Carol Sparvell, Nobby Clark and Allen Trotman. Mary Harwood, Mike Sparvell and Brian Grace were third.
