READING FC right-back Chris Gunter was in the Wales team that drew 2-2 in Austria last night to stay top of their World Cup qualifying group.

Gunter gained his 76th international cap in the clash in Vienna which saw Chris Coleman's Dragons pegged back twice by the host.

A sensational volley from Joe Allen put the visitors in front, but his Stoke City teammate Marko Arnautovic levelled soon after.

Wales regained the lead just before the break thanks to an unfortunate own goal from Tottenham's Kevin Wimmer.

But that was quickly wiped out soon after the restart when Arnautovic equalised for a second time.

It was a difficult night for 27-year-old Gunter and left-back Neil Taylor who were put under pressure for most of the match by the home side.

But a hard-fought point against an Austrian side unbeaten at home in four years was enough to keep them top of Group D on goal difference ahead of a home clash against Georgia in Cardiff this Sunday.

Royals skipper Paul McShane was an unused substitute for Republic of Ireland in a 1-0 win against Georgia also in Group D.

Seamus Coleman's first international goal earned Martin O'Neill's side their first win of the qualification campaign.

Three former Reading players were also involved as Shane Long started up front while Alex Pearce and Jonny Hayes were named on the bench in Dublin last night.

But Royals midfielder Stephen Quinn was forced to withdraw from the squad through injury as Ireland prepare for a trip to Moldova this Sunday.

Reading midfielder Sanro Weiser, who is yet to make a first-team appearance, was unable to prevent Liechtenstein from slipping to a 2-0 defeat to Albania after playing the full 90 minutes. Liechstenstein now travel to Jerusalem to take on Israel at the weekend.

Meanwhile, John Swift marked his return to the England U21 set-up in a 1-0 win in Kazakhstan thanks to an early Demarai Gray goal.

Reading's Player of the Month for both August and September remained on the bench throughout the game which saw Aidy Boothroyd's Young Lions qualify for next year's finals in Poland.

Swift had pulled out of the previous England U21 squad with a hamstring injury, but is clearly still a part of their future plans.

He is expected to play a part next Tuesday night when Boothroyd's side host Bosnia-Herzegovina at Walsall's Bescot Stadium.

Royals midfielder Danny Williams is currently on international duty with USA and could feature against Cuba in Havana tonight. Jurgen Klinsmann's side also face New Zealand in Washington next week.
