• The Reading and Newbury Chronicle sponsored Reading and West Berks League (RWBL) rolled out the first Trophy Event of the 2014/5 season on Sunday, and with the introduction of the Under 9 age group together with the U7 and U8s, the event was the largest yet with fifty teams playing at the Henwick Worthy Sports Ground in Thatcham.

It was the first of a two week event, with the results used to rank teams of similar ability into four divisions per age group.

This coming Sunday the teams play in the league resulting in the champions being crowned.

The RWBL won Charter Standard League of the year in Berks and Bucks because it runs these events, which are very popular with players and parents alike.

General secretary Roger Moon RWBL said: “These events are key to the development of young players and helps them in their transition towards eventually playing full time competitive football.

The Reading and Newbury Chronicles’ sponsorship goes a long way to ensuring that we can continue to run these events.” Teams from AFC Newbury, Cold Ash, CSA 07, Highmoor IBIS, Purley Jubilee, Thatcham Tornadoes, Thatcham Town Harriers and Westwood Wanderers Football Clubs all participated.
