WITH only two weeks left to make nominations, an Argentinian steakhouse and its manager have been given a nod in this year's Reading Retail Award.

Cau, managed by Darren Heath, were put into the Restaurant of the Year category by Nikkie Pullen.

Set on the slabbed over banks of the Kennet and Avon canal on Bridge Street, Cau markets itself as a collision of 'cosmopolitan sophistication' and 'irresistible chaotic energy'.

In other words, they serve steak.

Mr Heath, who has managed the restaurant since November 2015, said: “I have been in the catering industry for 10 or 11 years.

“I went to Cau on a fact finding mission when I was working at another Reading restaurant and was so impressed I decided to stay.

“In my opinion it is the best steak in Reading.”

Cau's main selling point is that all its meat comes from Argentinian cows and all its steaks are cut and cooked to order.

Ms Pullen, who regular eats at Cau, said:The new manager has brought a breath of fresh air to the way the staff engage with their customers.

“Service with a SMILE is now on the menu everyday from all of the team rather than dependent on who served you.

“The attention to detail around the level of knowledge the staff now have about the menu can only come from a dedicated leader who wants the best for his customers.”

The Reading Retail Awards are in their seventh year.

Nominations close on July 11 with the awards ceremony at the Hilton Hotel on September 17.
