A HAIR dressing salon tailored to children has been put forward for this year’s Reading Retail Awards.

Kool Kidz Kutz was nominated for the Service with a Smile category by Gemma Dowse.

Opened in February 2014, the Wokingham Road barbershop is owned and run by single mother Hayley Wall.

“When my daughter was six she had to come into the business with me,” said Ms Wall.

“One day she told me to start a hairdressers for children so I did my research and found that there wasn’t anything like that in the area.”

After a brief spell of looking for a suitable premises, Ms Wall came across an old Caribbean hair salon that became the base for her child friendly hairdressing ambitions.

A friend was drafted in to do graffiti on the wall, a big TV was put up in the corner that now plays Disney films on loop and special barbershop chairs modelled to look like toy cars were installed.

“Mums are overwhelmed that there children are sitting down and having a proper haircut,” Ms Wall explained.

“The parents can sit down and have a coffee while we get to work.

“A lot of people have had bad experiences getting their children’s hair cut but here it is a lot of fun.”

Regular customer Mrs Dowse said: “Since we started visiting this salon a couple of years ago I cannot take my children anywhere else!

“They love sitting in a fire engine to have their hair cut and love playing with toys and watching a film while the other child is having a hair cut.

“The provision of squash and a choice of treat at the end makes the experience pleasant and due to their experience, the staff make it as easy as possible with reasonable prices so happy parents too!”

The Reading Retail Awards are in their seventh year. Nominations close on July 11 with the awards ceremony at the Hilton Hotel on September 17.
