A PROJECT to plant dozens of trees throughout the borough has been completed thanks to generous fundraising.

Melanie Eastwood campaigned to get more shrubs in Woodley and Earley for a year after discovering the council struggled to replace old trees.

With the help of sponsorship from the likes of Berkshire Freemasons and the Woodley and Earley Lions, more than £2,300 was raised.

"A number of local charities and schools have shown lots of enthusiasm for the scheme," said Melanie.

"After making enquiries, I understood there was not the funds available for tree planting anymore.

"We have planted 70 trees as part of this year's National Tree week in Woodley and Earley."

Children from Addington, Beechwood, Earley St Peters and St Dominic Savio Primary School got involved with the planting.

The Lions donated eight cherry trees to Woodford Park, with other trees planted at Sol Joel Park and Woodlands Avenue.

Other sponsors included The Woodley Stars, Loddon Valley Rotary Club and Waitrose.
