FIRE crews pulled a body from the river in Newbury in the early hours, it has been revealed.

Emergency services responded to the call at around 3am on Monday morning and found an unknown body.

A spokesman for the fire service said: "We pulled a body from the river in Newbury.

"We sent a swimmer into the river to pull them out.

"At 2.48am on Monday, 27 November, Thames Valley Fire Control Service received reports of a person in the water on Mill Lane in Newbury.

"Two Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service crews from Newbury Fire Station and the water rescue unit from Caversham Road Fire Station.

"Firefighters retrieved the body from the water and then handed the incident over to Thames Valley Police. Crews were on the scene for around an hour."

A spokesman for Thames Valley Police said: "Thames Valley Police were called to Mill Lane at 2.46am after reports that a body was in the water.

"The body was recovered and sadly a woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Formal identification is yet to take place but next of kin has been informed.

"The death is being treated as unexplained but not suspicious."
