THOUSANDS of sci-fi film buffs descended on Reading last weekend for the town's annual Comic Con event.

Rivermead Leisure Centre was transformed into a supernatural extravaganza as people donned outfits based on their favourite movie and film characters.

Guests were wowed by Batmobiles and darlics as well as full-scale dinosaur models while meeting movie stars and browsing through iconic memorabilia.

Organiser Paul Waidley admitted months of hard work went into planning the successful event.

He said: "It was a fantastic event. We had close to 2,000 people turn up over the weekend.

"Saturday was particularly busy. It was great to see so many happy faces, we couldn't have asked for better to be honest.

"The raptor dinosaur was a big hit among the crowd and the cosplay zone was a great success again.

Among the star-studded line-up were Red Dwarf stars Chris Barrie and Danny John-Jules, who both played key roles in the hit sci-fi sitcom.

Also in attendance was actor Alan Harris, who played bounty hunter Bossk in the original Star Wars trilogy.

Mr Waidley, founder of Creed Conventions, said he will take a few weeks to reflect on this year's event before organising Reading's Comic Con 2018.

He added: "It takes a lot of organising. I have been planning this year's event since February or March last year.

"Next year will be the third year.

"It will be great to see Reading turn out in their thousands as always."
