THIS is the enormous snake which was found slithering near a children's hotspot last weekend.

The RSPCA were called after a 6ft python was found on the loose next to AcademySport Leisure Centre in Northumberland Avenue, Reading.

A stunned member of the public spotted the serpent shortly after 1.30pm on Saturday and called animal rescuers for aid.

RSPC exotics specialist Phil Hamilton was drafted in to capture the unwanted visitor.

He said: "If anyone thinks they may know who this snake belongs to then we would ask them to get in touch with us by calling our inspectorate appeal line on 0300 123 8018.

“It’s difficult to know how this Bredl's carpet python came to be near the sports centre. We don’t know if the snake has escaped or if he has been abandoned.

“The RSPCA does see an increase in the number of reptiles, like this snake, at this time of year, whether it’s because they have been abandoned or they have escaped.

“When the weather warms up reptiles do become more active so can be much quicker than people realise. We urge owners to keep their reptiles secure if they taken them outside for some natural sunlight.

“We urge any prospective buyers to do their research before getting an exotic pet and plead with anyone who is struggling to cope to contact us for help.”
