The future of a giant fibreglass strawberry has become the talk of Wokingham as residents wonder what will happen to the local landmark when Gray's Farm closes its doors.
The much-loved pick-your-own attraction, in Heathlands Road, will shut on Saturday after more than 50 years of trading.
Owner Peter Gray revealed this week that equipment from the farm would be sold at auction, including its tractors, picnic tables and the a large strawberry which has become synonymous with the farm.
Now a Wokingham councillor has joined the discussion about its future, with one saying he would like the authority to bid for it.
Councillor Mark Ashwell, Wokingham Borough Council's executive member for economic development, sport, leisure, countryside and the arts, said: "The strawberry is iconic. It's been around for many years. I remember it from growing up in Wokingham.
"I'd love to bid for it if there is an opportunity to do so. It would be great to see it incorporated somehow into the new development."
The large strawberry replica, which has been based at the farm for several decades, will be among items going under the hammer in an online auction next month, organised by Reading-based Thimbleby and Shorland.
Gray's Farm opened to the public in 1973 and has welcomed generations of families to pick their own fruit and vegetables.
The family sold the land to Wokingham Borough Council in 2014 and has rented it back from the authority in the years since.
Mr Gray, who is now in his late 70s, described the closure as the "end of an era" when speaking to the Local Democracy Reporting Service earlier this week.
The closure comes as the council develops plans for a major sports facility on the wider 60-acre site.
Speaking about the plans, Cllr Ashwell said: "It is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to provide a real cutting-edge sports facility for the whole borough. It is exciting.
"There are challenges around accessibility but we are getting ahead of the game, speaking to stakeholders and local businesses."
At a full council meeting last week, Cllr Ashwell said the authority's commercialisation team was working with local sports clubs on proposals.
Further updates on the site's development are expected in 2027.
