Rachel Alderton, from Bury, Lancashire, said at the time: “Many of the fans meet in Goring village every year but this year we wanted to do something special and not only celebrate George’s 60th birthday together but raise money for one of his charities.

"He was an exceptionally generous man and his charitable work meant so much to him, so it’s important for the fans that we continue to do this for him.

"It was also important for us to thank the lovely locals for welcoming us to Goring, so we decided to make a donation to the Goring Village Hall fundraising appeal in support of the local community.”

Dee Palmer, from Stoke-on-Trent, added in 2023: “I visited Goring for the first time on George’s 59th birthday.

"I had an idea to do something extra special for his 60th birthday this year.

"What better way to celebrate his legacy than with his music, in the beautiful village he loved so much, with other lovelies, raising money for a cause close to his heart.”

Following his death, Mr Michael was unveiled as the secret donor who helped save an Oxfordshire beauty spot when he anonymously ploughed £10,000 into a hard-fought campaign to save Thrupp Lake in Radley, threatened by RWE npower's proposal to dump ash in the water.

The campaign was successful and the power company scrapped its plans, with Radley Lakes preserved as a beauty spot for walkers and cyclists.

The singer's contribution to the successful campaign came to light eight years after he died.

As well as supporting the fight to save Radley Lakes, Mr Michael made many other anonymous donations to charity, often supporting individuals experiencing difficult circumstances.
