Years after a notorious odor was dealt with in one of the town's neighbourhoods, residents have reported that a new 'bad smell' has seeped its way into Whitley.
Comically known as 'The Whitley whiff,' a foul stench caused by sewage issues plagued the area for quite some time before the council dealt with the problem.
However, years on from this last incident, long-time resident Sharon said that another awful smell has replaced the last Whitley whiff.
"Everyone's going on about it on social media at the moment. We can all smell this awful smell," she said.
"The issue is with the hot weather we have been having it just makes Whitley reek! No one is quite sure what it is"
Sharon relayed that when she first moved to the area she experienced the Whitley whiff and had no clue what was causing it.
This was around 20 years ago. "Everyone knew about the Whitley whiff but I had never heard of it. I kept thinking what is that smell? I originally thought it was the house I was in," Sharon said.
She then went about trying to gauge where the smell was coming from and had a look at her drains among other household systems.
"It really stank, it made me feel sick!" she said. "A couple of weeks later I eventually spoke to my neighbours who all told me about the Whitley whiff."
Two decades on from Sharon experiencing this foul odor she says another awful smell has made its way into the neighbourhood.
"This stink now is a smell all on its own, I cannot even describe it! It is awful," Sharon laughed. "It is really bad and is like a different mix of smells."
Sharon said that the new stench was like rotten or moldy food that had been left at the back of the fridge for quite some time.
She expressed that it is a real shame that Whitley has smelled so bad during these past weeks as people want to enjoy the sunshine and are planning barbeques and other outside get-togethers.
"The Whitley whiff is back to haunt us! I think it is the dump, especially with the heat. I'm not sure what they would do about it. Someone online described it as maggots in the air!
"Imagine trying to enjoy a barbeque and eating your burger outside and all you can smell is that? It is rancid!"
