Members of a bowls club pulled a woman from the Thames on Monday afternoon - but she tragically died later that day in hospital.

The 55-year-old woman - who has not been publicly named - was found floating in the water near the Island Bohemian Bowls Club around 2pm on April 29.

A source at the club said members spotted her, and pulled her from the water.

The source told the Reading Chronicle: "They saw a woman floating in the river. I think they got her out, called the police."

Emergency services subsequently attended the scene.

The source said: "The police discovered that the woman was still alive, and she was taken to hospital.

"As I understand it, she died in the evening."

They added that one of the rescuers had suffered a "sleepless" night since the incident - but that neither of the club members were physically harmed in the rescue attempt.

The woman's next of kin have been informed of her death.

Senior investigating officer Detective Sergeant Alexander Willis said: "We are investigating the circumstances of her death, which is currently being treated as unexplained.

"There is no threat to the wider public but please speak to a uniformed officer if you are worried or concerned.

"I would ask anyone who was in the area near the river yesterday lunchtime to please contact us.
