BASINGSTOKE’S paddling pool is closed for maintenance work just as the weather warms up.

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council confirmed that work started last week at Eastrop Paddling Pool and hopes it will re-open in time for the summer.

The closure comes just as the weather has warmed up, with temperatures reaching 19 degrees this week in Basingstoke.

A spokesperson for the council said: “We carry out essential health and safety preparatory work on the paddling pool at Eastrop Park prior to opening each season. This identified the need for additional work before the paddling pool can open, including the replacement of the surface of the paddling pool, which has cracked.

“Work started last week and is being carried out by specialist contractors. We are aiming to open the paddling pool for visitors to enjoy this summer and will provide updates through our website and social media channels.

“The council’s other water play facility, the splash pad at Chineham Park, will open on Saturday, May 4 for the bank holiday weekend.”

Asked why the work was not carried out earlier in the year, the council said: "The surface had cracked and the tiles lifted over the winter because of the cold weather, therefore it was not an issue we could address until we carried out our checks and preparation work to open the paddling pool and the splash pad in the spring."
