WORK to demolish three "eyesore" blocks of flats is due to begin in Autumn with tenants currently being re-homed.

A plan to knock down the three high-rise buildings, Coniston House, Windermere House and Derwent House, off Hurcott Road in Kidderminster, was announced last year.

Community Housing, which provides homes and services in Wyre Forest, said it is "not feasible" to extend their lifespans due to the nature of their construction.

There are also plans to redevelop the area with more energy-efficient, modern homes.

Community Housing has been sourcing alternative accommodation for tenants for the "70+ households affected."

In an update, Community Housing has said demolition work is set to start after the summer and will be completed within 18 months.

A spokesperson for the housing group said: "We look to be on track with all our current plans, with a view to starting demolition in mid-late September 2024.

"We are working on the demolition of the three blocks being completed within an 18-month period.

"This will be once we have fully decanted the buildings and the process of rehoming the remaining tenants is progressing as expected".

When the plan was first announced in July 2023, Libby Jones, a resident of the flats for nine years, said: "We are very pleased with the decision in all honesty they are not costing efficient and are far too expensive to live in when you have children to keep warm.

"I've been trying to get out of here for years I have a 5-year-old and an autistic 8-year-old that doesn't cope well here.

"Most of the flats have serious damp and mound problems which aren't ideal with people that suffer from asthma and other health conditions as people in my home do.

"Children deserve far better than to be housed in these flats. Definitely the right decision has been made".
