On Tuesday thousands of children found out what primary school they would be attending in September.

A total of 1,850 children applied for a primary school place in Reading, with 93.74 per cent of them getting into their first choice school.

The successful 1,736 students will transition into their new school later this year.

A further 3.4 per cent of applicants (63) got into their second-choice school and 1.35 per cent (25) were accepted into their third-choice.

Brian Grady, Director of Education at BFfC, said: “We are delighted to be able to offer so many Reading families a place for their child in one of their preferred schools this year, with a significant percentage offered their first choice.

“I’d like to personally thank all primary school staff for their continued commitment to making Reading such a popular choice and the Education team at BFfC for working tirelessly to ensure every child in the borough has been offered a place.

“Good luck to all children who start primary school this September and we send our best wishes for their big day.”

In West Berkshire, 99.4 per cent of children received one of their top three options, 93.5 per cent getting a place at their first choice of school.

AnnMarie Dodds, Executive Director, People & Children's Services at West Berkshire Council said: "We're delighted that we've been able to give so many children their preferred choice of primary school.

"Starting school is a milestone for both children and parents, and we know that getting the school they want makes a huge, positive difference

"We always try very hard to offer as many children as possible one of their preferred schools and it's great that we're so close to achieving 100 per cent this year. We wish everyone the best of luck as their primary education begins."

Parents now have until Friday, May 3 to accept or decline their offer.
