Reading has been immortalised in a new street name in one of its sister cities.

The town has had close relations with the German city of Dusseldorf since 1946 in an initiative by past Reading mayor Phoebe Cusden.

Reading and Dusseldorf were officially twinned in 1975, with the relationship being reflected in Dusseldorf Way, located near the former Civic Centre site in the town centre.

Now Reading has finally been honoured with a street called Readinger Strasse in the German city.

Councillor Tony Page (Labour, Abbey) the Mayor of Reading, was invited to Dusseldorf earlier this year to acknowledge the naming of the street.

Cllr Page said: “My visit to Dusseldorf in February was specifically at the invitation of the Lord Mayor, Stephan Keller, so that I could thank and acknowledge him for the naming of the new Readinger Strasse and the future plans for the naming of a new square as Phoebe Cusden Platz on the completion of the major new residential development underway to the north of Dusseldorf Hauptbahnhof.

“This new square is a couple of years away but it is entirely fitting that Phoebe should be given her own recognition bearing in mind her role in creating the links between Reading and Dusseldorf immediately after the last war.”

Hauptbahnhof is the German word for central station, where a development comparable to Station Hill in Reading is being created. The city is located in the German state of North-Rhine Westphalia.
