Works that have caused traffic ‘hell’ in a Berkshire village are set to come to an end.

The Aldermaston Wharf Lifting Bridge has been closed since January for a major refurbishment to ensure the bridge functions properly.

A resident said the bridge closure has caused traffic ‘hell’ as drivers have had to follow a long diversion using the A4 Bath Road and the A340 Reading Road.

But in a relief to drivers, West Berkshire Council has confirmed the road will reopen as scheduled today (Friday, March 15).

At the time of the announcement of the closure, councillor Denise Gaines (Liberal Democrats, Hungerford & Kintbury) portfolio holder for highways said: “The upgrade of Aldermaston Wharf Bridge is essential to ensure the Bridge remains in a reliable working condition for many years to come.

“We understand the inconvenience caused by the road closure and assure you that we are working diligently to complete the project as quickly as possible.”

The project also meant that the Kennet and Avon Canal has been closed since February 26 to allow the bridge mechanism called the bascule to be reinstalled.

The canal will also reopen on schedule today.

It has been closed in two stints, the most recent one since February, and a previous closure to allow the bridge to be removed for works in January.
