Firefighters from across Reading rushed the scene of a blaze last night (12/3) after a fire broke out in the underground drains.

The incident occurred at around 7:17pm on Tuesday, March 12 below ground on De Beauvoir Road in Reading.

The Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service from the Wokingham Road fire station was on the scene for one hour and 45 minutes as they extinguished the fire.

A spokesperson from the fire and rescue service said: “Upon arrival, firefighters discovered and extinguished an electrical fire under a manhole cover before handing the scene over to Scottish and Southern Electricity.”

According to a source at the scene, the fire may have been caused by the excessive amount of rainwater that seeped into the underground cabling which sparked a fire.

Nearby residents were left without power for several hours after the blaze was extinguished.

There have been no injuries reported as a result of the fire.
