A 28-year-old who was stabbed in the head while out at a Reading nightclub is making "remarkable progress" since waking up from a two-week coma.

Tharel Thompson was attacked within the Walkabout club on Wilson Terrace on February 11, with emergency services rushing him to the hospital where he underwent two major surgeries.

The Barbados national was put into a medically induced coma, stacking up hospital fees in excess of £150,000 as Mr Thompson wasn't eligible for free NHS treatment.

At the end of February, Yvonne Thompson, Mr Thompson's mother issued an update on his health.

She said: "He is out of the coma, he is awake. He is drowsy, he still has the breathing tube in his nose to help him breathe but he has a lot of movement on his right hand and his right foot.

"His left hand this morning, he was able to place it on his chest, but the left side of his body is going to take some time to heal."

After gradually waking up and regaining the ability to squeeze his mum's hand and give a thumbs up, Mr Thomspon is recovering well.

In an update given by Mrs Thompson, she said: "He is fully awake now and he has a very good memory.

"The doctor who initially saw him when the incident happened said that he's making remarkable progress."

Mr Thompson is now only being monitored by a heart monitor and still receives nutrients via a feeding tube. He is slowly being introduced to water, being given with tablespoons.

He has asked his mum to buy £10 of grapes for when he is able to eat.

Mr Thompson added: "He is speech is very very strong and he even asked to go and get a spring bath in Barbados - so he's a little confused sometimes as to which country he is in.

"His right side is working very well but his left side he says he can feel pain in his arm, his knee and his ankle - so with all the therapy and so on the feeling on his left side will come back.

"They [hospital staff] have allowed him to stand up three times but he leaned a bit on the right side but he managed to balance himself.

"I want you to continue praying for him and donating to the GoFundMe. I will do what I can on this end because he is going to need months of therapy. So I really appreciate everything everyone is doing for him."

A GoFundMe to cover Mr Thompson's hospital bills has raised £23,409 with a target of £200,000. The fundraiser can be found at gofundme.com/f/tharel-thompson-stabbing-in-reading
