The team at a popular Reading pub has said an emotional goodbye to customers after deciding to close its doors.

The Palmer Tavern pub stands in a prominent location on Wokingham Road opposite Palmers Park.

After eight years at the Palmer Tavern, Robyn, Arlo, and Nala will be moving to the Three Tuns pub alongside the rest of the team.

On February 18, the pub posted an emotional goodbye to its customers on Facebook announcing their move to the new pub, which is also located on Wokingham Road.

They said: “As most of you know, the Palmer Tavern has been my baby, and making the decision to walk away wasn't easy.

“I had to put my family first and do what's right for us. I need to say a huge thank you to my amazing team. Without them, I wouldn't have been able to run both pubs for the last 7 weeks.

“Another big thanks to all of our customers. You're all amazing and have helped make the pub what it is.”

The Chronicle has contacted Greene King for more details on the future of the Reading pub.

In November, new plans were revealed to make changes to the building which pay respects to the Reading businessman the pub was named after.

Plans included installing a gibbet sign of George Palmer – the proprietor of Huntley and Palmer’s – in the car park and repainting the pub building with two-tone grey paint to replace the current blue.

At the time, Greene King said that they wanted to install a timber shelter in the garden, replacing fencing and adding new paving.

According to Greene King’s planning agents, the changes are aimed at bringing The Palmer Tavern ‘back to its former glory and re-establish its popularity within the town’.
