The owners of a popular Reading restaurant are celebrating their first anniversary after transforming a former Wetherspoons pub into a thriving eatery.

Clay’s Hyderabadi, run by husband and wife team Nandana and Sharat Syamala, used to be located in London Street, gaining a reputation for excellent Indian food from the Hyderabad region.

In February 2023, the restaurant, moved into their current premises in Caversham which used to be called The Baron Cadogan and operated by JD Wetherspoon until closing in March 2019.

Despite challenges throughout the year, they have posted on their social media thanking the local community for their ‘overwhelming support’ as the business finds its feet in the area.

In a post on social media platform X, the business said: “There’s an overwhelming sense of gratitude that I want to express. To each of you, our beloved community, thank you for your boundless love and support you’ve showered upon us.

“As we celebrate Clay’s Caversham’s first anniversary, I’m filled with optimism and determination. Your support is our strength and we promise to never take it for granted. We will continue to work hard, adapt and grow ensuring that clay remains a place of warmth, delicious food and community spirit.”

Although the owners have said that moving to the bigger premises in Caversham was the right thing to do, it hasn’t been without its challenges.

Rising inflation and steep rent increases are difficulties that the restaurant will have to muddle through in 2024.

“I’m committed to navigating these challenges especially for our four full time employees and their families who rely on us,” the restaurant owner said.

“As a wise friend once said: 'Hang in there and survive this year: 2025 will bring brighter days.' I hold onto that hope and continue to fight for a brighter future.

“Reflecting on the past year it's been an extraordinary adventure. The restaurant industry is like no other – the unpredictability, the highs and lows, and the emotional rollercoaster make this journey unique.

"There’s never a dull moment. Every day brings surprises despite the best-laid plans.”
