A driver was rushed to hospital following a crash between a Mercedes van and a lorry on the M4 carriageway.

The incident happened shortly after 4am on the westbound carriageway between junction 14 for Hungerford and junction 15 for Swindon.

The man in his thirties has sustained life-threatening injuries and currently remains in hospital.

Sergeant Tony Jenkins, of the Joint Operations Roads Policing Unit, said: “Firstly, I would like to send our best wishes to the victim of this collision, who has suffered life-threatening injuries, and our thoughts are with him and his loved ones.”

Following the incident the M4 Westbound motorway between junction 14 and junction 15 was closed and diversions were put in place.

Thames Valley Police are now appealing for witnesses of the collision to come forward with any information which may help in their investigations.

Sergeant Tony Jenkins, of the Joint Operations Roads Policing Unit added: “If you were driving in the area around the time of the collision and have a dash-cam, please check your recording in case it has captured something that could assist us and get in touch if you have.

“Anyone with information or footage should call 101 or make a report on our website, quoting reference number 239 of today’s date.”

Police have apologised for any inconvenience caused and hope to reopen the westbound carriageway between Hungerford and Swindon around 1 pm.
