A GoFundMe page, set up to celebrate a heroic crane driver who rescued a co-worker from a colossal Reading fire, has gone viral following his appearance on morning TV.

Glen Edwards, 65, used the winch he was operating to move a cage toward a workman trapped on top of the building at the Station Hill Construction site last Thursday, November 23.

Following the heroic rescue which thousands of people witnessed on social media, a crowd funder was set up to ‘buy Glen a beer as a token of gratitude’.

Jordan Grant, who created the page said: “We’ve all seen the video of the horrific fire on the high-rise construction site in Reading, and thanks to the 65-year-old crane operator who sent in the man basket & potentially saved a coworker(s) life.

“Could have been any brother (or sister) of the hook stuck up there and miraculously no serious injuries [were] recorded.

“Buy Glen a beer as a token of gratitude, a lot of £5er’s can go a long way.”

Glen appeared on Good Morning Britain on Tuesday, November 29 where he explained to Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley his experience as he lifted his co-worker to safety.

Susanna mentioned the GoFundMe, which at the time had raised around £350.

24 hours after the interview aired live on Good Morning Britain and the GoFundMe has raised a total of £9,018 from supporters across the UK who witnessed the heroic act via video or in person.

One person who donated to the GoFundMe said: “A quick-thinking, humble man who absolutely deserves the praise for this incredible rescue!

“Enjoy a couple of pints on me, you’ve got a lot to get through! Have a great Xmas and thank you for being brilliant!
