Scans for further sinkholes in Charvil have been carried out after a crater opened up in a car park near a primary school last week.

The sinkhole appeared in East Park Farm car park, near Charvil Piggot primary school, on Monday November 20. Charvil Parish Council then announced on Wednesday that some further collapse had taken place.

Now residents are awaiting the results of a test for other sinkholes below the surface, according to parish councillor Lee Cripps. He told the LDRS: “The hole hasn’t grown – I’ve flown my drone over every day just to check this.

“There was a Wokingham Borough Council ground radar survey performed over the weekend, but I don’t know the outcome of that.”

Councillor Cripps also said the cause of the sinkhole was still unknown – and hoped that Wokingham Borough Council’s survey might shine some light on it.

He said: “There’s been lots of guessing and supposition, but really you don’t get a sinkhole for no reason. You could say that we have in the last month, six weeks had a lot of rain.

“Is there an underground spring or stream? Nobody really knows at this point. Hopefully the radar scan will give a few.”

In an update released on Wednesday, November 22, Charvil Parish Council said further collapse had taken place and that the sides of the sinkhole were unstable.

The council said: “The sides of the hole remain unstable, and we have seen a small amount of further collapse since Monday.

“The sinkhole will remain cordoned off, and while the car park is open to pedestrians, cyclists etc we would ask that you take extra care around the safety barriers, and keep any pets under close control.”

But councillor Cripps said the further collapse had only taken place at the surface. He said: “The ground had dropped away beneath the bricks, and the bricks were hanging over in a friction hold. They kicked in the loosest circle of bricks when they came to inspect it.

“From the surface, the hole had grown, but it hadn’t grown underneath. It’s from the bricks, from the surface.”

Charvil Parish Council also said it was working with Wokingham Borough – which owns the land – and the primary school to keep disruption to a minimum. Charvil Pigott primary has informed parents of the sinkhole and is awaiting updates from the council.

Wokingham Borough Council has not acknowledged repeated requests for comment.
