Sainsbury’s plan to build a superstore in Arborfield received a mixed reception from local residents on social media after it announced its progressing proposal to build the new 16,000 sq. ft building.

The retail chain has said that it hopes to open its latest store at the north eastern corner of the Nine Mile Ride Extension.

The proposed plans which are yet to be submitted, will include the creation of 75 new jobs for local residents.

A mix of retail giants have announced their arrival within villages on the outskirts of Reading.

This includes the discount retailer, Lidl’s. Their plans were approved by Wokingham Borough Council to open on Beke Avenue, off Hollow Lane, as part of the Shinfield West development.

This development has yet to be opened following the approval.

After the news of Sainsbury’s new proposal, one reader said: “Will be interesting to see if it goes ahead and whether it is to be built before the planned Lidl in Shinfield?”

Another Shinfield resident said: “I live in Shinfield, we were consulted on a supermarket in the village years ago! It was supposed to go in next to, or behind the care home by the village green.

“And that's as far as it's got. We need a decent sized convenience store, as the Co-op is just not big enough! Don't think Aldi or Lidl are the type of store people need or want in the village.”

Although reader, Nick Webb disagreed with the expected proposal to build a Sainsbury’s within the comments on social media, Laura Jeffrey said that it would be a positive development for people who can't use public transport.

She said: “Some people don't drive, some people have children that won't go on a bus, some of us need something closer!!”

According to one reader, Dale Freeman, he has been waiting for the potential Arborfield Sainsbury’s for the past four years when he moved to the area.
