A shocking video has shown the moment sparks went flying as fun fair goers were evacuated from a fair ground ride.

Thousands of people gathered at Palmer Park in East Reading on Saturday, October 21 for the annual event featuring a range of rides and a host of entertainment including their free fireworks display.

A reader captured the moment when sparks were seen falling onto people enjoying the dodgems when one car got trapped in the centre of the ride.

The video was uploaded on Youtube by Jerzy Siemiątkowski who told people to be ‘careful and safe’ when using these funfair rides.

Dodgems or bumper cars consist of multiple electrically powered cars that draw power from the floor or ceiling.

The video shows that the wire that connects the car to the ceiling became trapped at a particular point, emanating sparks of electricity.

As soon as this occurred the ride was closed, and the people evacuated. According to organisers the ride was fixed by nearby engineers and was up and running again in minutes.

In the footage, a boy who was sitting under the sparks at the time could be seen checking whether they caused any damage to his clothes or hair.

The Chronicle contacted Beach’s Fun Fairs who confirmed that no-one was hurt.

A spokesman said: “All of the rides are ADIPS tested. ADIPS is the fairground and amusement park industry's own adopted standard for inspection and certification of fairground rides and amusement devices.

“Created by the major industry trade associations – in close consultation with the HSE – to improve safety standards and increase public confidence. Our ADIPS certificates are checked by Reading borough council prior to attendance.

“As can be seen on the video, no one was harmed. No one could be harmed. A wiper had broken, which is something that occurs with use, and we used the emergency stop following standard safety procedures. The ride was running again within a few minutes.

“Thousands attended this free firework display, and funfair event. We will be back again next year.”
