A number of campers have set up camp in one of the biggest parks in Reading.

The group have been spotted occupying Prospect Park in Tilehurst.

When the Local Democracy Reporting Service went to the scene, five mobile homes were spotted alongside towing vehicles.

People were seen sitting on portable chairs in a circle.

It is understood the group got access to Prospect Park from its Honey End Lane entrance on Tuesday, August 29.

Reading Borough Council and Thames Valley Police have been contacted for comment.

While unauthorised camping is not a criminal offence, trespassing is a civil offence.

In order for the council to get unauthorised campers to move on, it can either ask the campers to leave or apply for an eviction notice from a court.

A Reading Borough Council spokesperson said: "The encampments arrived at Prospect Park from Saturday, August 26, and officers visited the site on Tuesday, August 29 to assess it and issue notice to quit the land.

"We are subsequently in communication with our Thames Valley Police partners who continue to monitor the situation."

The council is making progress on its project to establish a dedicated site for Travellers and travelling communities to occupy in Island Road, Whitley.

The site will be made up of seven pitches, a picnic and play area and washing facilities.

The plan for the Island Road site was given approval by the council’s planning committee last October, with the project clearing final hurdles in March.

The council has been asked whether it is aware of the Traveller presence in Prospect Park and what measures it will take, if any, to persuade the occupants to end their trespass in the park.
