A new Aldi supermarket will open in Reading towards the end of this year, it has been revealed.

The German grocery chain is gearing up to open at the closed Toys R Us store at the Reading Gateway retail park near the M4 in Whitley.

An Aldi spokesperson has confirmed that the supermarket will take over the building previously occupied by the toy company and stated which month the supermarket is likely to open.

The spokesperson said: “Construction for our new Sentinel End store is progressing well as we move towards opening at the end of November this year.

“This will create up to 40 jobs for the community and enable local people to shop and save closer to home.”

In preparation for opening, Aldi has submitted an application to sell alcohol from 6am to midnight each day.

This licensing application has been submitted to Reading Borough Council.

Anyone wishing to comment on the application can do so by emailing licensing@reading.gov.uk.

The deadline for representations is Wednesday, September 13.

Reading Gateway retail park is also occupied by Burger King, Costa Coffee, Nando’s, a Beefeater restaurant and a Premier Inn hotel.

The Toys R Us opened there in 2017 but closed shortly afterwards the following year.

The new Aldi would be a short walk for those living in the Reading Gateway housing development, which was completed in 2017 and is made up of a mix of two-bed apartments and two to five-bedroom houses.
