Festival goers are complaining about eighties popstar Andy Bell's 'dreadful' performance at Rewind South in Henley-on-Thames.

The former Erasure frontman, responsible for hits such as A Little Respect, was likened to a 'drunk nan singing karaoke' for his vocals on Saturday night.

Thousands attended the annual Henley Festival to enjoy a host of artists, world-renowned DJs and cover bands, with many people paying hundreds to see Bell on the main stage.

But as his hour-long set got underway, fans quickly accused the singer of being 'inebriated'. He has not commented and was not available for comment.

Dozens took to social media to share videos of his performance where the singer received boos from the crowd. One attendee said: “Well, that was an interesting end to Rewind South. Had been looking forward to Andy Bell from Erasure but I think he’d had one too many before coming on stage.”

Mark Simmons, who sat front row for the performance, claimed that half of the 10,000 people who had turned up to see Bell left to watch another performer.

He said: “I really don’t know what happened, but he was completely out-of-tune and stumbling around. There were a lot of people who don’t want to go back to the festival because it ruined their experience.”

Despite this, some of Andy’s fans have rallied around him on social media with words of kindness and support.

One fan confirmed on Sunday morning (20/8) that ‘Andy was fine’ and just had a ‘bad day at the office’ after having ‘a little too much to drink’.

Another loyal fan said: “We have got to see the funny side of this, us loyal fans aren't going to be put off by Andy being HUMAN are we?! 38 years of entertaining us cancels out one bad night anytime.”

The Chronicle have contacted Rewind Festival for a comment.
