RESIDENTS have shared fond memories of a well-established fish and chip shop after it was put on the market for the first time in more than 40 years.

Seaspray fish and chip shop, on Crown Street, which has been owned by the same family for more than 40 years, has been put on the market for £479,500.

Residents have been quick to share memories of the popular takeaway that is in close proximity to University accommodation and the Royal Berkshire Hospital.

Claire Rock said Seaspray "used to be the best".

Another resident, under the name The Deputy Dog on a Reading Chronicle article, agreed: "Wow I remember this fish and chip shop as a kid it was the best chip shop around. [He] continued business up until his wife died both was a lovely couple."

The Deputy Dog added that the owners were "very good to us kids" after giving away freebies.

David Talbot recalled memories of visiting the Seaspray "after a night at the Turks or the Hook!"

Also commenting on the article, Bonbon said it really was a great fish and chip shop.

The resident under the name Bonbon added: "Was sad to see it close back in September/October 2016 - at first the sign on the door said it was for a few weeks, but it never opened again! No decent chippy in that area now."

It has been listed by BusinessesForSale as having "good potential" for alternative development plans, subject to planning permission approval.

Residents were also quick to speculate about previously planning issues.

Rachel Tompkins said: "I heard that the owner wouldn't sell originally as he didn't want the chippy knocked down and flats built there", before adding that the "fish and chips from there were the best."

The Deputy Dog agreed by saying a "property developer tried to force him out because he would not sell to them".
