A JAIL sentence has been handed to a young man who hacked into his ex-girlfriend’s Snapchat account and published a naked photograph of her.

Jake Skinner, of Chestnut Crescent, Shinfield, was sentenced at Reading Crown Court on Friday (June 30) to 12 months in jail.

The 22-year-old pleaded guilty to logging into his ex-partners account and uploading a FaceTime screenshot of her naked upper body, taaken when she was 17-years-old, onto her story.

He then changed her account details so she was unable to log back in to delete the photograph.

Skinner also pleaded guilty to sending the photograph to the girl’s father and sister to show them ‘what she’s like’.

He was convicted at Reading Magistrates Court on March 22 this year for one count of sending threatening voice notes, one count of threatening to disclose a sexual photograph, one count of disclosing a sexual photograph and one count of harassment without violence.

The offences occurred between November 22 last year and January 21 after Skinner had been in a relationship with the girl.

However, when the pair split and she started dating someone new, Skinner starting to send threatening messages to them both such as: “Kill yourself, I’m going to petrol bomb your house.”

On January 5 this year, Skinner uploaded the screenshot.

In a victim impact statement read out to court, the girl said: “I’ve been depressed. I fear for my own safety.

“To this day, knowing how many people have seen the image of me makes me hate myself. I don’t go outside anymore.

“I’m a completely different person.”

The court heard that Skinner has 10 previous convictions for 13 offences from railway fares to a public offence in 2018.

Defending Skinner, his barrister said: “There’s not very much I can say about the offence, it’s clear it was desperately unpleasant.

“His behaviour and his response to it clearly displays a significant degree of immaturity.

"He does take responsibility, he knows it was wrong, but he perhaps needs further support and work to be done…to get a better understanding of his behaviour.”

Sentencing, Judge Sarah Campbell said: “It was no doubt distressing for them.”
