Lewis Capaldi has been called 'inspirational' after announcing that he is cancelling all future shows, including Reading Festival, as he puts his health first.

The announcement comes after the singer powered through an emotional set on Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage as he steadily lost his voice, revealing at the end of his performance that he plans to take some more time off.

The 'Someone You Love' singer was set to headline Reading Festival on Saturday, August 26 on the Main Stage West but will no longer do so.

Before the final song of his set at Glastonbury, he told the crowd: “I recently took three weeks off just because I’ve been none stop the past year and I wanted to take a wee break from my head for my mental health.

“I wanted to come back and do Glastonbury because it’s obviously so incredible so I just want to thank you all for coming out. I was scared but you’ve really made me feel at ease so thank you very much for that.”

Posting on Twitter, Reading Festival said it is "gutted" that Lewis Capaldi won’t be performing this year, "but health comes first and we wish him a speedy recovery".

Commenting on the announcement, Reading residents have been quick to share messages of respect for Capaldi.

Residents called the singer 'inspiring', 'brave' and 'strong' for putting his health first.

Lesley Miles said: "Health comes first. He did amazingly well on Saturday. He persevered until the end even though you could see how tough it was for him."

Sarah Butler agreed saying: "Rest up Lewis relax and come back refreshed when you are ready. Health comes first."

Lewis Green said he has "big respect" for sharing mental health struggles.

Several Reading locals shared that they would "be there when he returns".

Anit Lanu said: "Bless him! He will come back stronger and better and we will all be waiting for him".

Reading Festival has said it is "working hard to book a replacement".
