Mayors and councillors throughout Reading have told us how they will be celebrating the King's coronation this weekend.

The Coronation of King Charles III will take place on Saturday, May 6 with a celebratory Bank Holiday on Monday, May 8.

Saying what she will be doing over the long weekend, councillor Rachel Eden (Labour, Whitley), the Mayor of Reading, said:  "So it's going to be a really lovely weekend across the whole of Reading.

"As mayor, I will be attending Forbury Fiesta which will launch Reading Children's Festival on Saturday.

"It's a free event open to anyone but aimed at children and families.

"I will also be attending at least one street party on Sunday, and on Monday I will be going out to do tree planting at Lakeside Care Home.

"The tree has been granted by the Redlands Women's Institute, so it will be a good mix of council, private and voluntary events."

The Lakeside Care Home is located in Whiteknights Road, East Reading.

A representative of Ridgeline Trust Therapeutic Garden is expected at the tree planting.

Responding on behalf of the Reading Liberal Democrats, cllr James Moore, a Tilehurst representative said: "On Coronation Day the Tilehurst Liberal Democrat Councillors will be holding their regular monthly surgery as always, from 10:30 am until 12 noon in Tilehurst Library to meet and hear the concerns of residents. All Tilehurst residents are welcome to drop in.

"We will then be going to spend quality time with our friends and family after the surgery and months of our election campaign.

"We hope all Reading residents are able to enjoy the long weekend, especially if they have a local street party close to them."

Meanwhile, cllr Tahir Maher (Liberal Democrats, Maiden Erlegh) the mayor of Earley Town Council could be taking part in coronation celebrations in London.

He said: "Me and my family may be going into London to join the crowd which will be really lovely.

"It's a once in a lifetime opportunity. Or at least, it will not be happening again for several years.

"It's a great opportunity to see something historical. It will be interesting to be part of, to get the atmosphere in terms of being in the crowd.

"When Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II passed away we went down to that for a nice walk up to where she was lying in state.

"It's nice to feel party of history in that sense.

"I'm looking forward to the coronation, it will be a great event."

Cllr Maher's attendance of the coronation is dependent on family health.

Out west, parish councils that fall under West Berkshire are holding community events over the Coronation weekend.

Cllr Kevin Page, chairman of Tilehurst Parish Council said: "The council is running a picnic, so we should get a big turnout for that."

The picnic is taking place at Turnhams Farm recreation ground in Little Heath Road from 3pm to 7pm on Saturday.

Over in Purley on Thames, the Parish Council is holding a Bank Holiday sports event on Monday, May 8.

There will be sports at 10am, a barbecue at 12pm followed by teas from 2pm to 5pm at The Barn off Beech Road in Purley.
