Reading residents can enjoy free fitness as the new outdoor gym has opened in Palmer Park, following a £75,000 investment.

The seven-station gym offers free fitness for all with robust equipment to suit people of varying ages and abilities.

Lead Councillor for Leisure and Culture, Cllr Adele Barnett-Ward, said: “I’m delighted to announce the new outdoor gym at Palmer Park is ready for everyone to enjoy.

“Our much-loved parks already provide great opportunities for people to keep active. The addition of this new outdoor gym offers and encourages free fitness opportunities for all, with good provision for those with accessibility issues so that the widest possible range of users can benefit.”

There is equipment for upper body workout including chest press, shoulder press, the horizontal row and the pull-down. For the lower body there is a leg press.

The sit-up bench and lower back bench focus on the core muscles.

The gym was designed by experts at KOMPAN. By using the free KOMPAN Outdoor Fitness app, residents will be able to unlock advice, and guided workouts using the outdoor gym equipment.

Leisure facilities across the borough are being improved so that every resident can benefit.

The new outdoor gym at Palmer Park is a further investment, in addition to £40 million already pledged for a new pool and leisure centre in Palmer Park and a pool and leisure centre at Rivermead.
