Prosecuting, Brian Reece told the court that the girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was 12 years old at the time of the incidents which occurred in Earley, Reading.

Her evidence for the jury has been pre-recorded under Section 28 of the Youth Justice and Criminal Evidence Act 1999 due to her age.

Opening the trial, Mr Reece said: “She turned 13 [when] a record was made of her allegations. Since then, in January of this year, she attended court and was cross examined and that was recorded.

“You’re going to go hear about two incidents which both happened…when Mr McGlynn had drunk a lot of alcohol.

“He was a very heavy drinker and was drinking a lot at the time. Count one and count two are the same incident, they represent the beginning and the end of the event that lasted about an hour in which the defendant kissed a 12-year-old girl and at one point picked her up and put her on the sofa and carried on sexually touching her.

“Count three was a few days later. It went on for a very long time.”

The court heard that the girl had not told her family what had happened between the two incidents but eventually texted her mum the following month disclosing the alleged assault.

Before police became involved in the case, Mr Reece allegedly said he ‘couldn’t remember’ if he had touched the girl, adding that ‘it’s not the sort of thing he would have planned’.

He later denied the allegations in a formal police interview.

The jury were then shown a pre-recorded interview of the young girl giving evidence to the police.

She said: “It made me very, very uncomfortable. He was drinking a lot. I’m not the type of person to try and stop it.

“I was in so much shock that I didn’t know what to do. I don’t know if I did anything that gave him the impression that I wanted to do it but I didn’t.”

The trial, which is expected to last three to four days, continues.
