A GOOD Samaritan ‘yanked’ a man who was alleged assaulting a girl in the middle of Reading and removed him from her.

Reading Crown Court heard that a witness saw Adam Gerezgher, who has been charged with one count each of sexual assault and intentional strangulation, ‘grabbing’ a girl at about 1am on October 8 last year in London Road.

The 28-year-old, of no fixed abode, has denied both charges.

The witness said he had been walking home from Friar Street at the time when he told the court he noticed a couple ‘struggling’.

He told the jury he heard a female screaming and noticed a man grabbing her before she fell to the ground.

“The man [caused her to fall], he was grabbing her and then she just ended up on the floor. She was screaming throughout.

“When I noticed I was worried that maybe this was a couple and it wasn’t an actual thing. So I decided to ask if everything was okay and at first I didn’t get a response and then the second time the woman was screaming ‘no’.

“I just wasn’t expecting something like that to actually be happening.”

The witness said the man was still holding the woman around her upper body and neck.

He said: “It was at the point after she screamed no that I grabbed the man from around his waist by his stomach and yanked him to the right.

“He let go at the point. The girl got up and ran towards Cemetery Junction and the man stared at me for five to 10 seconds and then took off towards town in the opposite direction.”

The girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was then seen a couple of minutes later coming out from a side street and continuing to run in the same direction.

“We then carried on walking and we saw the girl re-emerge. We did call out to her but we didn’t get a response.”

When asked if the witness thought the alleged victim and Gerezgher could have ‘bumped into each other’ and fell, the witness disagree.

“That did clearly not happen what I saw,” he said. “From the struggled that was on that was not from falling over.”

The witness confirmed he did not see what was going on prior to the girl falling to the ground or hear Gerezgher say anything at the time.

The trial continues.
