Here are five most read stories you may have missed this week in Reading.

1. Northern Lights illuminate Berkshire sky – in pictures

An incredible display of colour was spotted in the skies above Berkshire this week.

The northern lights were seen above the county on Monday night (February 27) for only the luckiest of star gazers, and photography enthusiasts from across the area caught a brief glimpse of the colourful phenomenon.

It comes after the Met Office forecast the rare meteorological event on Sunday evening, with more colourful spectacles taking place on Monday.

2. ‘Jeffrey Dahmer is my hero’, defendant allegedly claims

Reading Chronicle:

A COURT had heard that a man accused of sexual assault allegedly named infamous serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer as ‘his hero’.

Michel Yanni, of Recreation Road, Reading, is currently on trial for one count of ‘sexual assault’ and one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The 44-year-old has been charged with these offences against a woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, which are alleged to have happened on February 24, 2020, and February 26, 2020 respectively.

He denies the charges.

3. Traveller site expansion approved near AWE despite concern

Reading Chronicle:

Plans to turn a pitch with eight traveller caravans near the county's atomic weapons establishment into nine permanent pitches have been approved.

Previous attempts were objected to by Aldermaston Parish Council which also said that the homes were often rented out to non-travellers.

“There is a danger that the site becomes a mobile home park which is rented out in a DEPZ [Detailed Emergency Planning Zone] area,” it said.

4. Reading FC set up for six point deduction as soon as ‘next week’

Reading Chronicle:

Reading boss Paul Ince has spoken of the six point deduction heading Reading FC's way for financial misdemeanours.

The club, with a six point suspended sentence hanging over them after breaching Profit and Sustainability regulations, would drop to just seven points clear of the drop zone with 13 fixtures remaining.

Leaks first appeared from national journalists in the past week, befeore the EFL released a statement to explain that it was looking into the Royals finances.

5. Met Office UK snow verdict as country set up for cold snap

Reading Chronicle:

The Met Office has offered its verdict on our chances of snow next week, as temperatures are set to plummet.

Senior presenter at the forecaster, Aidan McGivern said there were “pretty strong” signs that a burst of cold air would bring changes to the weather from this weekend.

He added that as a result there was an “increased chance” of some snow in the next two weeks.
