Popeyes Louisiana Chicken restaurant and takeaway opened with a bang this week as queues of people rushed to try their coveted Chicken Sandwich and a full menu of American favourites.

During a sneak peek visit to the chain branch, CEO Tom Crowley introduced some of their bestsellers to us and our reporter Nicole McBride was given an insight into why one of their dishes ‘broke their internet’ in 2020.

Here’s what we thought.

With 3500 restaurants and countless drive-thrus dotted across the world, the fast food chain may not be quite as big as its rivals KFC, however the quality of food and explosive flavours far out-rank its competitors.

That signature crunch that is somehow missing from other fast-food chicken burgers is a permanent fixture in all their dishes due to the unique way in which the burgers are made.

The crispiness of the chicken breast which overflows the high-quality bun is only complemented by mayonnaise and gherkin pickles that are a standard with each burger. Although it may seem like it could have the possibility of falling apart, this burger is put together like a piece of art.

It is not surprising why it is sought after by celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Beyonce.

Every bite makes you want another and by the time you know it you’ll be buying another portion. Although a little sceptical at first, I went in with an open mind and by the time I left, my mind was blown by the sheer quality (and quantity) of the food.

Their signature burger however isn’t the only thing on the menu that had my jaw hitting the floor. Biscuits and gravy may be thought of as a treat only found in America, however Popeyes have found a way to bring it to diners in Britain.

Despite the word ‘biscuits’, the dish actually includes a type of warm and fluffy scone served with spiced gravy. Disgusting as it might sound, this gets the Chronicle’s seal of approval. It makes an excellent side with a burger and is indeed a nice change compared to chips that normally come with a take-away.

And what washes down a take-away better than a surprisingly refreshing and light Oreo Milkshake or a classic fizzy drink which you can pour yourself from the drinks station.

Unlike many fast food brands, the food is surprisingly just as good whenever it goes cold including the chicken wrap which is less calorific and new to the menu.

If I had one recommendation if you’re feeling even a little bit curious, I would say head down to Popeyes and try it for yourself. You won’t be disappointed.
