Reading will face a new Norwich manager in the dugout on Friday, with Dean Smith sacked.

The Canaries, still fifth in the table, have won three in 13 matches and have taken the decision less than 24 hours after a 2-1 defeat to Luton Town.

The 51-year-old took over in 2021 and oversaw relegation from the Premier League, looking for an immediate return.

They face Reading on Friday in Norfolk, but Steve Weaver and Allan Russell have taken caretaker charge of the team.

"As the club continues to work towards its on-field objectives this season, the board believe that it is the right time to make this transition," the club said in a statement.

"The club will now work to identify and appoint a new head coach that is able to deliver both the level of performances required to challenge at the top end of the league whilst implementing a consistent style of play."

It will be the seventh time the Royals have faced a new manager this season, with Blackpool, Stoke, Sunderland, Huddersfield, West Brom and Hull all coming up against the club quickly after a change.

Reading drew 1-1 with Norwich in the reverse fixture.
