A nine-year-old autistic actor from Reading has been recognised for his work in the entertainment industry after landing the role of ‘Bruno the Break car’ in a children’s TV series.

Learning Disability England and the Voluntary Organisations Disability Groups announced that Elliot Garcia was awarded for his extraordinary achievement in the National 2022 Leaders’ List.

Held in partnership with Learning disability England and the Voluntary Organisations Disability Group, winners are chosen to highlight the stories and achievements of people with learning disabilities and autism.

The Voluntary Organisations Disability Group said: “We are proud to support the Leaders List 2022. Celebrating the work and contributions of people with a learning disability and autistic people is so important – we are looking forward to celebrating the 2022 winners.

“Thank you to our partners who have made this fantastic event happen, and an even bigger thank you to all of those who have entered this year.”

As winner of the sports, arts and entertainment category, Elliot said that he hopes that in the future he will see a greater diversity and inclusion across TV.

Bruno the Brake Car brings a level of diversity to kids TV that has never been seen before in the children’s TV programme ‘Thomas and Friends’.

Elliot Garcia said: “We need to show the world that there are all different kinds of people out there whose brains and body’s work differently”.

Three others winners were recognised in this year’s list for their work in other categories.

BBC Radio 2 DJ hosted the Leaders List awards this year, which main aim is to give people with learning disabilities and/or autism a platform to voice unheard issues.

Ken Bruce, BBC Radio 2 DJ and Leaders’ List award ceremony host, said: “I have had the privilege of hosting the Leaders’ List Awards Ceremony for several years, yet the achievements of the Leaders never cease to amaze me!

“I have been inspired by all the stories and am very proud to be part of an event that rightfully celebrates these achievements. A huge congratulations to Elliott and all the winners.”
