Reading boss Paul Ince has confirmed that he is in touch with Andy Carroll's agent regarding the possibility of keeping the striker beyond January.

The 33-year-old's deal currently expires next month, however he is a popular figure with fans and teammates alike, with many wanting the former England star to stay at RG2.

Although in difficulty, with a transfer embargo still looming over the club, Ince has revealed that discussions are taking place with the number two's representatives.

"I'm talking to his agent at the moment," Ince confirmed. "He loves it here and loves being here so hopefully in the next two weeks - we can't do anything until January - we'll have some information on that.

Reading Chronicle:

"Speaking to AC [Andy Carroll], the lads love him, he's been great but if someone comes in at Premier League level then it's tough because we can't compete  and we know that about some of our other players but as far as AC is concerned, I am hoping, fingers crossed we'll be able to do something come January - if every other club leaves him alone!"

Another out of contract next month is young defender Amadou Mbengue.

Cementing his place in the first team before the World Cup break, he is now a key part of Ince's plan going forward.

"He's got a lot of learning to do but he's popular and fun. He can play all over the park as we've seen and we enjoy him here.

"He has a long way to go but I think he's going to turn into a very, very good player. He's quick, he can pass and he has all the attributes you'd want to become a good player.

"It's just a case of nurturing him. His decision-making and some other stuff needs coaching but if he listens and learns he'll become a top player."
