A recent video has revealed that summer signing Amadou Mbengue has earned the nickname 'Cheeseburger' among his teammates.
The 20-year-old arrived from Metz in the summer and has quickly become a fan favourite for his passion, speed, and direct play.
The Frenchman is still learning the language in his first season away from his homeland, an opportunity which his teammates used to create his nickname: Cheeseburger.
Speaking on a video from the club in Tenerife, Academy graduate Tom McIntyre explained how a conversation with Sam Hutchinson brought about the inside joke.
"The first week he came, his English was a bit ropey," the defensive partner started to explain. "Hutch said, ‘cheers’ and he said ‘cheers?’ Hutch said that cheers means thank you, and he [Mbengue] said ‘cheese, like cheeseburger?’ So, now he’s called cheeseburger."
As it stands, the young defender's contract is up next month, however supporters and management alike have explained they would like to extend his stay in RG2.
In a laid back Instagram reel on the Spanish island, McIntyre went on to reveal insight such as whether he prefers mayonnaise over ketchup and who is most lilkely to be late to a flight.
All returning from Tenerife last week, Championship action resumes against Coventry City on Saturday.
